Who Are We?

For individual AGG Member bios, look HERE.

The professional answer to the oft-asked question “Who Are You, Austin Growers Guild?” is as follows:

We are a growers collective dedicated to expanding the opportunities available for Austinites to participate in strengthening our local food economy by focusing on closed-loop systems: seed to harvest to plate to compost.

“Growers” does not quite encompass all that we are; there are people involved in the AGG from all aspects of the closed-loop system: growers, builders (of gardens, of chicken coops, of community), future distributors, composters, policy makers–as well as everyday consumers, gardeners, & folks who just love great company!

We’re busy transforming the way people view urban living and community spaces.  We meet regularly to exchange ideas and support one another’s efforts–all while laughing hysterically and staying up way later than any farmer ever should.

The much more casual answer to the same question:

We’re a group of friends (old and new) who love to get our hands in the dirt–some more than others.  We’re young, we’re not-so-young, we’re full of opinions, and we’ve got great vision for the future of Austin’s local food and farming economy.  It’s not uncommon for us to have 5 hour “meetings,” which might better be termed “Introductions from the Peanut Gallery.” We LOVE food and some of us LOVE farming, but we all love each other–calloused hands and stinky boots and all.

We get together to exchange ideas, network contacts, and materials–everything from tillers and row cover to pianos and couches.  If you’re looking for great company and a good, hearty belly laugh, feel free to come along to our next get-together.  Leave a comment if you’d like more info!

Thanks for doing this—I do not have a Facebook account, and will not get one. Will I be able to join the growers guild otherwise?

(I sent a personal email, but just so everyone else knows as well….)
You certainly don’t have to have an FB account to “join” us–simply a love of community and an interest in some aspect of urban food production and Austin’s local food and farming economies!

    Many thanks,
